Jose Mourinho will watch Manchester United's EFL Cup quarter-final with West Ham at Old Trafford from the stands on Wednesday night (Thursday AEDT) after being handed a one-match touchline ban.

The United manager admitted a Football Association charge of improper conduct after he was sent off against the Hammers for booting a water bottle in frustration in the teams' 1-1 Premier League draw on Sunday.

An FA statement read: "Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today (Wednesday, November 30 2016), Jose Mourinho will serve a one-match touchline ban with immediate effect.

"The Manchester United manager admitted an FA charge that his behaviour in or around the 27th minute of the game against West Ham United on Sunday (November 27 2016) amounted to improper conduct."

Mourinho, who was also fined NZ$27,000 by the FA, was sent off by referee Jon Moss at the weekend when he reacted by angrily kicking a bottle of water on the touchline after Paul Pogba's booking for diving.

It has led to his second touchline ban of the season, the first coming after he disputed a decision during United's 0-0 home draw with Burnley in October.

That followed disciplinary action taken against him for comments made about referee Anthony Taylor before their Premier League fixture at Liverpool, which also finished 0-0.

Mourinho chose not to comment after the game.
