Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has made hay while the sun shone on the Gold Coast, recording a five under round of 67 to tie for second on the first day of the Australian PGA Championship.

Being one of the first to tee-off out of the entire field, Fox went into the clubhouse as early leader before being overtaken by Queenslander Andrew Dodt who finished on seven under.

Fox shot a bogey-free round on surprisingly soft greens with birdies on the third, fourth and ninth holes. And he made the most of the longer holes with birdies on the 15th and the 16th.

The Auckland-born Fox sits one shot in front of world number seven Adam Scott and two shots in front of fellow kiwi Danny Lee who finished on three under.

Play on day one of the Championship was halted due to inclement weather.
