Opinion: Seven sporting questions for 2017

As we close the book on an incredible year of sport, here's seven sporting questions I'm looking forward to being answered in 2017.

Just how good is Joseph Parker?

We know the guy is good. You don't win a WBO heavyweight world title without being good. The trouble is that the guy he beat to win it, Andy Ruiz, was good too. Great, he ain't.

Joseph Parker's now part of a conversation that involves the best in the heavyweight division: Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Wladimir Klitschko. Parker will have to defend his title in 2017 - probably against undefeated Hughie Fury, another good, young fighter. His handlers Duco are in a hurry to get Parker in the ring against another heavyweight champion in a unification bout.

By the end of next year, we'll be a lot closer to knowing whether Parker's good, among the best, or one of the greats.

What will the All Blacks look like after the Lions series?

With the likes of Ben Smith, Aaron Cruden and Israel Dagg all possibilities to head overseas, and others like Sonny Bill Williams and Nehe Milner-Skudder to return from long-term injuries, it's really hard to confidently say what Steve Hansen's All Blacks side will look like come the end of the year.

Along with issues like Aaron Smith's form slump, and rising stars like Jordie Barrett set to sparkle, the team - especially the backline - could take on a whole new look.

Is Kane Williamson ready to lead the Blackcaps?

If New Zealand Cricket chose a different path in 2011, then Ross Taylor would have been the obvious choice to replace Brendon McCullum as Blackcaps captain. Too much water had passed under the bridge to go back there.

Kane Williamson's clearly a great player, and a great leader too. He was groomed for the captaincy, but part of the reason he got it was because he really was the only option: a strong reflection on him, but perhaps a poor reflection on those around him.

He's inherited a team in a rebuilding phase that's shaping a new identity. He needs senior players to help him lead with support through performance: runs from Guptill, Taylor, and Latham; wickets from Southee, Boult and Wagner. If they don't, the pressure on Williamson could start to show.

If not now for the Warriors, can they ever?

Warriors fans head into every season thinking - or at least dreaming - "this is our year". But they can never say the club's looked in as good a shape, on paper, as it does heading into 2017?

With Stephen Kearney heading an all-star coaching team guiding the likes of Johnson, Foran (hopefully), Tuivasa-Sheck, Luke and Mannering, this is also the most "Kiwi"-looking Warriors team we've ever seen.

With Foran only set to stay for a year, and a pile of leading players coming off contract at the end of the season, it's not quite "now or never", but there could be another rebuild at Mt Smart before they can look like challengers again.

Do we really still care about the America's Cup?

How many more heartbreaks can we suffer? How many more taxpayer dollars can we sink into Team New Zealand? It'll all be worth it if  Peter Burling and the boys can bring home the Auld Mug in 2017.

But if it all goes wrong in Bermuda, then my patience for New Zealand's participation in the America's Cup might disappear.

Is Anthony Hudson the greatest All Whites coach ever?

Some will scoff at that question, but if things go the All Whites' way next year, the answer will be an unequivocal "yes".

Depending on who you ask, Hudson is a charlatan or a genius. People who've made early judgements usually opt for the former, those who've worked under him go for the latter. The jury's out, partially because we don't see his team play nearly enough.

2017 will see the All Whites face Russia, Mexico and Portugal at the Confederations Cup, before a likely home and away playoff against the fifth-ranked team from South America (Colombia, Chile and Argentina among the contenders) for a place at the World Cup.

If the All Whites can build on performances against the USA and Mexico, more surprises could be on the way. A first ever win at a senior FIFA men's tournament, or qualification for Russia 2018 would certainly silence any of Hudson's doubters.

Can Lydia Ko get back to her best?

Lydia Ko enjoyed a very good 2016, which tailed off towards the end of the year and cost her a title or two, and a fair bit of cash.

Ko's form is under the spotlight following her decision to part ways with her coach David Leadbetter, and the eyes of the golfing world will be watching to see whether a blip turns into a slump. The 19-year-old remains the top-ranked women's golfer in the world, but only a return to her best will see her stay there.
