Opinion: Who is Hughie Fury?

One man has loomed large into Joseph Parker's rear-view mirror - and is chasing hard.

In fact, he wants JP to pull over and join him in the carpark.

Bullish talk indeed!

But of course Hughie Fury is bullish. In the alphabet soup of heavyweight belts and sanctioning bodies, the 22-year-old has been presented with a golden shot at the WBO crown despite being ranked number five.

He's the mandatory challenger with Wladimir Klitschko, Andy Ruiz Jr and David Haye out of the picture.

So, what do we know about Tyson Fury's cousin and how big a threat is he to Parker?

His record of 20-0, with 10 knockouts, appears impressive. His amateur history is also noteworthy, having won gold at the Youth World Championships - but that's where the hype ends and reality bites.

In Fury's last fight against Fred Kassi, he weighed in at 231lb (104.8kg) certainly not the biggest heavyweight in the division.

But Fury isn't overly muscle-bound - and that's a concern. He beat Kassi for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental title, but only after a seven-round points decision due to an accidental clash of heads.

And his work became much more ragged as Kassi refused to take a backward step.

Completely untested, there is no way of assessing how good Fury actually is.

Don't be fooled by the beefed-up record - the biggest name on it is journeyman Dominick Guinn, who has now lost seven of his last nine.

But with an infamous cousin and the might of BoxNation behind you, anything is possible.

The brainchild of Frank Warren, BoxNation has recently signed a UK broadcasting deal with BT Sport, giving it much more financial clout and TV exposure.

Warren's public history with the Hearn whanau (Barry and Eddie) is also well-documented - and with Eddie controlling golden goose Anthony Joshua, the Furys require another path to the big money.

And while we're on the subject of money, Hughie Fury has already turned down the chance to fight Joshua.

"They tried to offer me peanuts - couple of hundred grand," Fury said.

Hmm, interesting. What about the "I'll fight you in the carpark" attitude?

It obviously doesn't apply to taking on the increasingly impressive IBF champion Joshua. And the Fury camp know he's not ready to take on AJ - but is he ready to take on Parker?

The short answer is no. Parker was nowhere near his best against Ruiz Jr and could well have lost that fight but he didn't.

And Parker has been in the ring with a much higher calibre of boxer. In terms of head movement, balance, combinations and power, he's streets ahead of Hughie Fury.

And as for that unbeaten record, let's look at Fury's first 10 fights as a professional.

Those opponents had 159 defeats between them. And his most recent five bouts 58 losses.

These numbers are laughable and he should be nowhere near a title shot. However, this is the modern world of boxing and Hughie is giving it the large one.

But for Joseph, this is a God-send.

He will beat Hughie comfortably and maybe get Tyson angry and out of retirement - now that's a fight worth getting excited about.
