Hawkes Bay's Finn Reynolds and his doubles partner Durate Vale of Portugal have lost in the Australian Open junior boy's doubles final in Melbourne.

The pair lost to fourth seeds Yu Hsiou Hsu (Chinese Taipei) and Lingxi Zhao (China) 7-6, 4-6, 5-10 in an hour and 28 minutes.

"I am extremely disappointed we didn't get the win today," said Reynolds.

"If I'm honest, our opponents played well and they put us under loads of pressure."

Reynolds and Vale exceeded expectations, making the final by beating top seeds Toru Horie (Japan) and Yibing Wu (China) in the semifinals.

The 17-year-old is hoping he can use his form in the doubles in his singles play in future grand slams.

"I couldn't have asked for any more in my first junior grand slam" said Reynolds.

"Hopefully I keep playing well and play in more junior slams and go one better."

The last time a Kiwi male was in a junior Grand Slam doubles final was 1993 with Steve Downs and James Greenhalgh won the title at the Wimbledon juniors. Later the same year Downs made the US Open Junior singles final before losing to Marcelo Rios in the title match.
