Kiwi Formula E driver Mitch Evans shooting for Formula One dream

Kiwi motorsport star Mitch Evans may have defected to driving electric cars but he still harbours dreams of one day becoming Formula One World Champion.

The 22-year-old has just made the switch from the official Formula One feeder series to race for Jaguar in the Formula E Championship, a motorsport event that uses cars that look exactly like F1 cars but with electric engines.

While it may be a little off course for Evans if he wants to reach the heights of Formula One, he says he's exactly where he should be to climb to the top.

"About half the field are ex-F1 drivers," Evans told Newshub.

"The level of drivers in Formula E is very high. It's not a step backwards for me, it’s a side step and it's just as good as what I could do elsewhere."

His dad, iconic Kiwi motorsport driver Owen Evans who owns the national land speed record, wasn't a big fan of Formula E at first.

However Evans said he was converted as soon as he attended his first race.

"He definitely wasn’t one of the fans when it initially came out but [now] he's all for it.

"He came to my first race in HK and he was stunned by the magnitude of the event and the technology of the cars."

Evans next date with the steering wheel is in Buenos Aires next month for the Formula E Championship.
