Opinion – How the Blackcaps rated – First Test vs Bangladesh

Jeet Raval - 2

Was undone in both innings by the bounce of the Basin Reserve pitch and didn't look anywhere as good as he did during the Pakistan Test series. Can be slightly forgiven in the second innings as he was exposed to a dual spin attack from almost the first ball, but he's unlikely to get a pitch as batting friendly as this for the rest of the summer .

Tom Latham – 7

Deserved all the plaudits after his big first innings and it will be a good confidence boost for the tougher tests of Australia and South Africa. He dropped a sitter on day three and was undone by a bit of turn in the second innings, but all round a very good Test.

Kane Williamson - 8

Was the second innings hero for the Blackcaps with an unbeaten 104 and it was appropriate that he hit the final runs. If he played the last game of his career this summer, he'd already be recognised as a New Zealand great. Marks have been deducted because Williamson just seemed to let the Bangladesh first innings meander a little too much.

Ross Taylor - 6

It's tough to mark Taylor too hard in his first Test back from eye surgery and while he looked like he struggled on the hard and fast wicket in the first innings, he looked a lot more comfortable in the second. The Blackcaps missed his presence and his experience on the park while he was sidelined.

Henry Nicholls – 3

Seems to be getting far too many chances at this level and Hesson must be examining other options at five. Looks a little out of his depth in Test cricket and his contribution to the side, despite a fighting 53 in the first innings, is negligible. One of those players where the jump to international cricket from domestic looks a little too big.

Colin de Grandhomme – 4

Another one of those players who can't seem to adjust to Test cricket. His back lift doesn't really suit hard bouncy pitches which culminated in a poor first innings score, but he'll likely get another shot in Christchurch for the second Test. His bowling is handy for green seamers but if there's nothing in the pitch and the ball doesn't seam, his pace is a little pedestrian.

BJ Watling – 5

Is undoubtedly the Blackcaps' best wicket-keeper at Test level but Hesson will be crying out for a little batting consistency. Contributing with 49 in the first innings, Watling will be looking to turn more of his starts into bigger scores. There's no denying his directions in the field and his glove work are extremely solid.

Mitchell Santner – 7

Fell victim to some very good hitting by Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in the first innings but it feels like he's discovering more about his game with every outing. Hit a very good 73 in the first innings which helped New Zealand toward their first innings total of 539 and will seek to add that type of consistency to his game.

Tim Southee – 5

Had an up and down Test with a few early wickets on day one before being taken to town for the rest of the match. The potency that we saw from him last summer seems to have died down a little bit but hopefully he's building toward big things later in the year.

Neil Wagner – 7

With match figures of six for 188, Wagner was easily the pick of the Blackcaps bowlers. The Basin pitch suited his hard-hitting style and his high hip-line that he tends to bowl tested the Bangladeshi batsmen who're used to low and slow pitches.

Trent Boult  - 5

You have to wonder whether a strike bowler such as Boult is being slightly overused, particularly in innings such as the Bangladesh first dig. Seems to have lost his swing mojo a bit and isn't bowling in tandem with Southee as they previously have. There are signs of an injury to Boult so that best be monitored because he is our number one pace bowler.
