Video: Rivals Braden Currie, Josiah Middaugh team up for Red Bull Defiance race in Wanaka

Together, Braden Currie and Josiah Middaugh will likely be unbeatable.

New Zealand endurance athlete Braden Currie has teamed up with his biggest rival Josiah Middaugh for the Red Bull Defiance race in Wanaka.

The pair are red-hot favourites to win the third edition of the two-day adventure race, and are seen as unbeatable competing in the same team.

They are one of 65 teams competing in this year's event.

The Red Bull Defiance race includes mountain biking, running, kayaking, abseiling and vertical rock-climbing.

It's a course Braden Currie knows well, as he helped design the Red Bull Defiance race four years ago.

Despite Currie and Muddaugh being rivals, they are happy to be teaming up for this race.

"We have really similar styles, you know we like to push it from start to finish," said Middaugh.

"Instead of trying to break each other, we'll be trying to help each other, and I think it'll be a pretty natural fit."

This year, the athletes will be wearing special devices which will help sports scientists can use to help tailor the athletes' training programmes

Currie will use data from this weekend's race to further refine his performance as he looks to try and reclaim the Coast to Coast title in a fortnight's time.
