The Wellington Phoenix face an uphill battle to keep their reigning player of the year, Glen Moss.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper is off contract at the end of the season, and there's been significant interest from multiple clubs in South Africa.

Moss is said to be open to the prospect of a shift to South Africa, where fellow Kiwis Jeremy Brockie and Michael Boxall have both enjoyed tremendous success at SuperSport United.

Newshub understands the Phoenix haven't made any offer to Moss, but indicated he'd need to take a pay cut to stay in Wellington.

That may come as a surprise for a player who won the club's Player of the Year award last season, and appears a contender for the same award this season.

The likely departure of Moss would mean the club have no goalkeepers on contract for next season.

Back up Lewis Italiano is also off-contract, as is young New Zealander Oli Sail.

"Wellington Phoenix has never conducted its player recruitment or retention through the media - any discussions that are taking place with players, whether ours or from other clubs, are ongoing," the club said in a statement.

"We will announce in due time when there are concrete developments regarding player signings."
