The WBO has slapped a deadline on British boxer Hughie Fury to sign a contract to fight world champion Joseph Parker.

He has been given until early Saturday morning [NZT] to agree to a fight or he will lose his mandatory shot at the WBO belt, the Boxing News website reports.

Fury was expected to be the leading candidate for the New Zealander's first title defence, but a date and a venue for the bout has yet to be agreed upon despite Parker's New Zealand promoter, Duco Events, winning a purse bid to host the fight.

If Fury doesn't meet the deadline, another fighter ranked in the top 15 will be selected by the WBO to challenge Parker.

A tweet from Fury's father, Peter, on Friday afternoon [NZ Time] seems to suggest that the team are intent on signing before the deadline.
