Pie-eating Sutton United hero resigns after gambling investigation

Sutton United's reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has gone from cult-hero to unemployed following yesterday's FA Cup loss to Arsenal.

A figurehead of the lowly fifth tier side during its fairytale run through the tournament, Shaw became an internet sensation after he was shown on TV eating a pie on the reserves bench during their fifth round defeat.

It's since emerged that it was a publicity stunt for a betting agency who were offering 8-to-1 odds on the 46-year-old eating a pie live on-air.

Shaw has now resigned, with club boss Paul Doswell lamenting a somewhat sour end to what's been a dream couple of months for the team.

"What happened didn't make us look very professional," Doswell told Sky News.

"It's something that we've dealt with quickly as a club - Wayne himself offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon, which has been accepted.

"It's a very sad end to what has been a very good story."

Shaw admitted to being aware of the betting promotion prior to the match, but played it down as simply a "bit of fun".

"We are told we are not allowed to gamble as it is full-time professional football," Shaw told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme.

"In no way did I put anyone in jeopardy of that - this is not the case here, this is just a bit of fun and me being hungry."

However it isn't all bad news for the rotund reserve, supermarket chain Morrisons have since offered him a new job as an official Pie Taster, which incidently comes inclusive with a year's supply of the product.

"Wayne’s performance last night sets him apart as one of the country’s most famous pie connoisseurs," said Morrisons' Chief Pie Buyer Tessa Callaghan.

"We were really impressed by his commitment to pie eating, and we understand that a good pie is the best way to warm up for any occasion, even if it is the biggest night of your football career."
