Video: Mad Mike Whiddett determined to grow drifting in New Zealand

Kiwi drifter Mad Mike Whiddett has returned home from the world drifting series and is on a mission to change the sports image and fuel it's growth in New Zealand.

Widdett is very popular in New Zealand and all over the world. He has more than 2-million likes on his Facebook page, that's more than All Blacks greats Dan Carter and Richie McCaw combined.

The Aucklander started drifting from nothing and is now one of the word's best

"When I first started drifting I had a Mazda 323 that was like 100 bucks  out of the trade and exchange," said Whiddett.

"We would take it to gravel roads and on paddocks and just slide around but now with venues like this, the opportunity to become a drifter as a career, as I've proven."

Mad Mike's given up his spot on the world championship series to grow the sport in New Zealand and today's ' Mad Mike's Summer Bash' event at Hampton Downs was a chance for the young petrol heads to show their wares.

However Widdett ran into some mechanical issues and missed out on the final.

Gaz Whiter edged out Nico Reid in the final to claim his first title since 2014.
