Video: Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson contemplating overseas offers in final year of contract

The Warriors' star halfback Shaun Johnson says it would be a mistake not to look at what's on offer from other clubs before making a decision on his playing future.

The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Auckland NRL club, and is reportedly attracting interest from multiple teams across the Tasman as well as the Super League in Europe.

Johnson says he has a lot of love for his current club, and although he would like to sort his playing destination for 2018 and beyond as soon as possible, he doesn't want to make a rushed decision.

"For me I have never been in this position before and I want to get it right," Johnson told Newshub.

"It's a business. I have been put in this position, so yeah, it would be silly of me not to and I think everyone would agree with that.

"I'm dedicated to this club and I'm looking forward to ripping into this season regardless of what happens in the future, so that's where my mind is at the moment."

Speaking at the launch of his upcoming documentary about his family ties to Laos, the birthplace of his mother, Johnson said the filming process really grounded him.

"Sometimes with what I'm doing you sort of lose sight of where you are, and then you go over there and see how those people are living, the jobs they have, what they have to do to provide food for their family - it just puts everything into perspective."

Johnson spent time in Laos with his mother and brothers to experience the culture and trace his family roots.

The former world player of the year said the whole experience had led to the best off-season of his career and has left him in a great mindset ahead of the 2017 NRL season.

"I've had the best break I've had throughout my whole career and this was at the centre of it all, so people are going to get to see that, people are going to see how I was able to switch off from a difficult season last year and how I am feeling fresh for this season.

"I'm feeling really good with the trial games we have had and with training at the moment."

Johnson hopes the documentary inspires people to learn about their own family history and be proud of their heritage.

"I just want people to embrace where they come from and be very proud of it, because I am."

The Warriors' first game of the season is Sunday, March 5, against the Newcastle Knights in Auckland.
