St George Illawarra's captain Gareth Widdop remarkably led his side to victory over the luckless Warriors after writing off his car on the way to the stadium.

The English international was involved in a car accident but emerged unscathed and was able to make it to UOW Jubilee Oval for the start of the match.

It made a difference as well, slotting five from five to see the Dragons to a 26-12 win.

Dragons' coach Paul McGregor paid tribute to Widdop after the match.

"The car is written off. To put that aside and perform like that is a credit to him," McGregor said.

Widdop's 10 points saw him become the third player in the history of the joint-venture club to reach 500, behind Jamie Soward (665) and Mark Riddell (517).

Widdop saw the funny side to the situation.

"I'll be riding my push bike to training for the next few weeks. That's life."

The win sees the Dragons move to third on the NRL table after two victories on the trot.
