Sam Ackerman: The five greatest halves in Warriors history

Opinion: Kieran Foran will make his belated debut for the Warriors (touch wood) against the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday.

The one-time Kiwis captain and Premiership winning playmaker comes with much hype and the tag of 'Saviour' of the 2017 season.

Whether or not Foran can make that sort of impact remains to be seen but he certainly has the pedigree, skill and athleticism to rival the best halves in club history.

Stacey Jones

261 games /77 Tries/674 points/ 1 Grand Final appearance

The benchmark every Warriors half will always be measured against, the understated but never under-rated Jones played with a level of control that belied his 19 years of age, as he entered first grade.

Two-hundred-and-sixty-one games later, and the 'little general' is still considered the best to wear the No.7 jersey for club or country - his 2002 Grand Final try the perfect example of the skill and determination that inspired his team-mates.

James Maloney

75 games/24 tries /1 Grand Final appearance

It was "James who?" when this Eels and Storm lower grader bowled up to Mt Smart Stadium looking for an opportunity, and he made the most of it.

Arguably the most Australian of any Australian to shift across the Tasman, the fiercely competitive Maloney brought a little mongrel and plenty of skill to Auckland, and played a key role in the rise of Shaun Johnson.

His stay here was only 3 seasons long before heading home for Premiership glory, State of Origin and Kangaroos honours - but they left an indelible mark.

Shaun Johnson

129 games/57 tries /1 Grand Final appearance

If you believe social media, every win the Warriors have had since 2012 is because of Shaun Johnson - and every loss is his fault too.

The truth falls somewhere in the middle.  At his best, Johnson possesses an attacking skill set the envy of any half of any era - even icons like Andrew Johns, Wally Lewis and Johnathan Thurston are in awe of his speed and footwork.

He's the top points-scorer in Warriors history - and he's done that in half the games that Stacey Jones took. All that's missing is his best being consistently delivered.

Thomas Leuluai

78 games/11 tries

Not a man who received - or asked for - many plaudits, but never underestimate the effort put in by Leuluai in his two shifts at Mt Smart.

Arguably the best defensive half the Warriors have seen, he was a strong support player with a solid kicking game.

Brian McClennan, the coach who brought him back from a lauded stint in the UK (but who was gone before he arrived) described Leuluai as an enhancement player.

He makes everyone around him better. If everyone tried as hard as Thomas Leuluai, the Warriors would be a force to be reckoned with.

Lance Hohaia

185 games/57 tries/2 Grand Final appearances

While the likes of Greg Alexander, John Simon and Gene Ngamu may be more out and out Warriors halves, they didn't have the impact on the club that Hohaia did.

While the Huntly Hurricane did spend considerable time in his career at fullback, hooker and as a bench utility, his ability in the halves had him labelled as the next Stacey Jones.

He couldn't live up to that billing but Hohaia's classy touches and running game made him a valuable playmaker.
