Video: No return date yet but fire burns for Sonny Bill Williams

Sonny Bill Williams has admitted his return to rugby could be at least a few weeks away but he's raring to go after a period of reflection and reinvigoration.

The 31-year-old has been on the sideline since tearing his Achilles tendon during the first match of the All Blacks Sevens failed 2016 Rio Olympics campaign.

He's yet to make an appearance in 2017 after moving north to play under Tana Umaga at the Blues but Williams said the desire is stronger than ever.

"I just want to get out on that field," said Williams.

"I'm at that stage now where the fire's burning and I think that's one of the reasons why I count this injury as a blessing because I really have the drive now to be better than what I was before."

Williams' return was originally penned for April 1 but that date is now looking increasingly unlikely.

"Whether it's three weeks, whether it's five weeks, I'm really eager to get out there and play some footy."

While it may be frustrating for Blues rugby fans to not have the blockbusting back available, Williams said he's grateful for the time he's had off to do things he probably wouldn't have got the chance to do had he been fit and playing.

"I'm very happy and content at the moment and a lot of that comes down to understanding that injuries are blessings in disguise.

"I've really used my time to enjoy myself at home, especially with the birth of my second daughter, things like that, being grateful for every day that I have."

"When I go home I put the phone on flight mode, help out with mum cooking sometimes, change some nappies. I just try to be present at home, get told what to do from my oldest daughter."

However, he hopes he's brought something else to the franchise during his time on the injured list.

"I've just tried to be as positive as I can, try to help out some of the younger boys whenever I can."

"Just be a positive energy to the club."
