Former Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick could be set for a quick return to coaching, with the Scotsman the favourite for the Newcastle Jets job.
The World Game reports that Merrick heads a five strong shortlist, which also includes Harry Kewell, Robbie Fowler and Ante Milicic.
Merrick has been out of work since resigning from the Phoenix late last year, amid an awful start to the season.
The two-time A-League coach of the year is still well regarded around the league though, and would be a strong appointment from the current wooden spooners.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix are also conducting a search for a new head coach.
Auckland City boss Ramon Tribulietx has been linked with the post. He has applied for the role in the past, but declined when Newshub approached him for comment.
