The Black Ferns have secured victory over Canada at the Kitakyushu Sevens in Japan, with Michaela Blyde scraping in the final try.

New Zealand trailed 14-12 with seconds remaining, but a knock-on from the kickoff handed the Black Ferns possession, which led to the match-winning try.

After Hannah Darling scored for Canada, the match was tied at 7-7 at halftime, but New Zealand responded when Niall Williams pounced on a loose ball then ran in under the posts

Jen Kish scored Canada's second midway through the second half, but New Zealand once again responded, with Portia Woodman making a break down the wing to score in the corner.

Tyla Nathan-Wong missed the conversion and it looked like Canada had done enough to win, but it wasn't meant to be.

Earlier, the Black Ferns defeated Fiji 21-0 in the semi-finals, while Canada crushed Australia 33-0.

Australia finished third in Japan after beating Fiji 19-17 in the third/fourth playoff.

New Zealand hold a 10-point lead over Australia in the World Sevens Series standings, with two rounds to play, in Canada and France.
