Video: Golfer Ian Poulter has 'unnerving' encounter with alligator at PGA event

Golfers are well versed in dealing with hazards on the course, but they're not typically of the life-threatening variety.

Playing at the PGA event in South Carolina, Ian Poulter hit his tee shot into the drink and was forced to take a drop, leaving him confronted with an on-looking alligator at water's edge as he attempted to line up his approach to the green.

The Englishman attempted to scare it away but the gator remained stoic, peering on from perilously close range.

Eventually one of the caddies was able to repel it with some extra shakes of a club but it still left Poulter having to turn his back to the threat as he made his next shot, which fell just short of the green.

"I took a couple of dummy swings and he decided to come in and take a closer look," the 41-year-old told Sky Sports.

"I wasn't very comfortable with that. It's a little unnerving. I didn't want to put my club in the water because I didn't want him to take it. One of the other caddies came in and was a bit more aggressive, and he went."

Poulter overcame the scare to finish the round in fifth place, just three shots off the lead.
