World Masters Games: 101yo rises to the challenge

At 101 years old, Man Kaur could be excused if she chose to take life easy.

But instead she's planning to take home gold from the World Masters Games.

You could say Ms Kaur is the great-great-grand master of the Games - she's already won more than 20 medals around the world.

She's sure to pick up four more in New Zealand, because at 101, she's the oldest competitor and the only one in her age group.

Ms Kaur told Newshub she feels very happy when she wins and encourages others to take up running.

She's already become a bit of a celebrity after arriving from India at the weekend.

But she only started training at 93 - it was her son's idea.

"I thought that she has no health problem and nothing about her knees, so I took her to the university ground and she finished 400 metres without any problem," Gurdev Singh said.

Her best time in the 100 metres was 1 minute and 1 second. It may be slower than the women's world record of 10.49 seconds, but she makes it across the line.

And it runs in the family - Mr Singh is also competing.

"I'm 79 now, so next year I will be competing in the 80-plus group," he said.

They say the key to a long healthy life is simple.

"The secret is that we eat healthy food, no junk food... We are practicing every day, one day on the track, one day in the gym, so we are doing well due to that."

Ms Kaur will take part in the 100 and 200 metres, javelin throw and shot put, and she'll win gold in every one of them - and at 101, they're well-deserved.
