Long-serving keeper Glen Moss has revealed that the insecurity at the Wellington Phoenix played a significant part in his decision to link up with former coach Ernie Merrick at the Newcastle Jets.

A decision on who'll take the reins at the struggling A-League club is expected by the end of the month, but they also won't be offering contracts to current or new players until they have confirmation of their coach.

Moss admitted it’s a tough situation for the players to be involved in, with no word on who will take charge, and whether they have a future at the club.

"While [the Phoenix] expressed plenty of interest in wanting me to stay, they couldn’t offer anything to myself or any of the players until the end of month, so that kind of forced my hand a little bit," Moss told Newshub.

"When there’s other clubs showing interest and they’re able to offer you contracts, then that's all you can look at, at the time."

Moss also received an offer from South Africa, but after talking with the Jets and Merrick, decided to stick around in the A-League, signing a one-year deal.

He believes the sooner the Phoenix appoint a new coach the better, in order to commence preparations for next season.

"For a player it’s always a concern about who the manager’s going to be, especially when it takes a long time for that decision to be made."

Moss’ departure leaves behind a worrying gap between the sticks at the Phoenix, with youngster Oliver Sail the only contracted goal-keeper. Reserve gloveman Lewis Italiano is off-contract, and yet to re-sign.

There could be more players leaving Wellington if the situation isn’t resolved, midfielder Roly Bonevacia another to head off after signing with the Western Sydney Wanderers yesterday.  Veteran Vince Lia is also rumoured to be considering other offers.

While Moss is off to Newcastle, he has found memories of his time at the Phoenix, after making 140 appearances.

"Last year winning the Players’ Player and Club Player of the Year award was pretty special and something I won’t forget, I’ve made lifelong friends there."

Moss is looking forward to his next challenge - tackling the Confederations Cup in June with the All Whites.
