LeBron James eclipses Michael Jordan as Cleveland Cavaliers destroy the Boston Celtics

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James has moved past Hall of Famer Michael Jordan as the leading scorer in NBA playoff history.

James, who entered Game Five of the Eastern Conference final against hosts Boston Celtics, needed 28 points to surpass Jordan (5,987 points).

He reached the milestone late in the third quarter with a three-point shot during the Cavaliers 135-102 blowout win over Boston.

James led all scorers, netting 35 points while guard Kyrie Irving scored 24.

The Cavs never trailed and scored a stunning 43 points in the first 12 minutes, then continued to dominate the second quarter taking a 75 – 57 lead into halftime.

Any hope of a  remarkable home side comeback were put to bed in the third, Cleveland blitzing the Celtics 34-17 to book a third straight NBA finals showdown with the Golden State Warriors.

It was a record breaking night for the reigning NBA champions, not only did 'King James' eclipse 'Air Jordan's' playoff record but the Cavs scored the most playoff points in a franchise history, and the 43 scored in the first quarter was also a new record.

The finals tip-off on June 2nd [NZT], James seventh straight appearance in the big dance.

The 32-year-old James, who is seeking a fourth NBA title, took 212 post-season games to surpass Jordan, a six-time champion who played 179 playoff games.
