The three-way handshake has returned from the dead, lingering over the rugby landscape like a bad smell.

This time it was Japan's national rugby union team head coach Jamie Joseph, New Zealand Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew and Japanese Rugby chairman Tadashi Okamura who were caught in the act.

As the trio met to celebrate the All Blacks vs Blossoms Test in the upcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup, they faced the awkward challenge - how can three people shake hands simultaneously?

Mr Joseph seemed to enjoy the moment, taking a nervous-looking Mr Okamura's hand within his giant paw, while Mr Tew exerted his dominance with a hand on top.

Sadly Prime Minister Bill English had left the room.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup witnessed one the all-time great three-way handshakes, when then Prime Minister John Key awkwardly added his sweaty palm to that of winning captain Richie McCaw and World Rugby boss Bernard Lapasset.
