A family decision to buy a boat for the kids was the catalyst for one of the greatest success stories in New Zealand sporting history.

Peter Burling steered Team New Zealand to victory in the 35th America's Cup on Tuesday completing a 7-1 win over Oracle Team USA.

Burling's parents, Heather and Richard Burling, decided their two young boys needed to get out and about on the weekends and purchased a small boat so they could sail around the inner port of Tauranga Harbour.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Burling, 26, has Olympic silver and gold medals to go with his latest accomplishment, as well as multiple world 49er titles with teammate Blair Tuke.

Heather said it was all about their boys having a bit of fun.

'We bought a boat so the kids could enjoy sailing," she told Newshub in Bermuda.

"The guy that sold us the boat sent us to Tauranga Yacht Club and then Peter got ridiculously good ridiculously quickly."

The Burlings also credited the Tauranga Yacht Club for moulding their son into the world beater he has become.

"Tauranga Yacht Club is a really amazing club," Heather said.

"Really fantastic facilities, a wonderful place for kids to learn how to sail. It's just awesome."

Heather said New Zealanders should be incredibly proud of the team.

"Every single person at Team New Zealand has worked so hard for so long to achieve this and it's just an amazing team effort."
