Americas Cup 2017: Sir Ben Ainslie doesn’t believe Oracle can catch Team New Zealand

Sir Ben Ainslie was a big reason in Oracle's come-from-behind win in 2013.

Sir Ben Ainslie played a key role for Oracle at the 2013 in San Francisco and it looks like the American crew have made a play at him again.

Ainslie replaced American John Kostecki as a tactician when Oracle trailed 5-0 four years ago, and helped spark one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history.

Speaking to Newshub, Ainslie said Oracle have asked him for advice on where they can make gains against the faster Kiwi boat.

“I think they've been asking all of the teams for advice and for the teams that have been eliminated what gains did we feel were there on the table,” Ainslie told Newshub.

However Ainslie doesn't see the room for improvement as he did back in San Francisco

“Certainly in the lighter wind, the jump that Team New Zealand has got over all of the other teams is significant and very hard to see Oracle bridging that gap.”

The British team are so impressed with Team New Zealand's design they've had spy boats out seeing what they can learn for the future.

Ainslie is confident it is only a matter of time before they win the America’s Cup and they are already preparing for the next one.

“It might be that we approach people from other teams and I'd expect a transition as we go through this cycle on to the next from one team on to another and I think that's natural in any development sport.”

The 40-year old is rumoured to be chasing Team New Zealand, Head of design Dan Bernasconi.
