The Blues have bolstered their stocks at first-five with the confirmation of two new signings in Otere Black and Bryn Gatland.

In a trade of sorts, current first-five Ihaia West will make his way to Wellington to join up with the Hurricanes.

Black's shift north from the Hurricanes had been widely anticipated after spending two years as back-up to All Black Beauden Barrett, signing on until 2019 after representing both the NZ Maori and the provincial Barbarians against the Lions earlier this month.

"I am excited about the chance to be part of such an exciting playing group at the Blues and I am looking forward to working with Tana again," said Black.

"There are no guarantees, but I hope to make the Blues 10 jumper my own and I am looking forward to all the challenges that come with that."

Gatland impressed in his four appearances as a replacement for the Blues this season and has committed to a one-year deal, joining fellow prospect Stephen Perofeta to round out a promising young core at first-five.

"Bryn impressed us when he came into the Blues this year with his ability and a level of maturity beyond his years," said coach Tana Umaga.

"He showed with his performance against the Lions that he can rise to the big occasion."
