Lions Tour: Warren Gatland sets unique challenge for Lions players' traveling to Whangarei

British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland has set his team a unique challenge while they make the trip north for their first match.

With groups of three travelling in 14 separate Land Rovers, Gatland instructed each car to find the best pie between Auckland and Whangarei.

Welsh winger George North told Newshub it was a good way to bond while making the trip.

"Our kit man will try the pies and hopefully we will win a prize accordingly," he said.

Meanwhile, prop Jack McGrath is trying to get one step ahead in the pie challenge by using technology.

"We are googling good ones and asking around," said McGrath.

"Some of the names we can pronounce so I think we are going to wing it."

The results of the pie challenge are yet to be known, but rest assured Newshub will be the first to let you know when the winning pie has been determined.
