An MMA fighter has responded after a rather awkward accident during a UFC strawweight fight in Oklahoma was broadcast to the world.

American-Russian martial artist Justine Kish was up against US kickboxing specialist Felice Herrig on Sunday, and things quickly became messy when the two ended up fighting on the ground.

Herrig managed to get on top of Kish, and quickly began to exact her finishing move - but while Herrig had gained control of the fight, Kish lost control of her bowels.

The 29-year-old failed to keep the faecal matter in until after the fight, and ended up soiling herself in the middle of the Octagon.

The two women can then be seen rolling around in the excrement as they jostle for an advantage.

Eventually Kish lost the contest - and a chunk of her pride - but bounced back well with a comical post on Twitter.

"I am a warrior, and I will never quit," she wrote. "#Sh*tHappens haha be back soon."

Herrig was asked about the defecation situation by tabloid entertainment site TMZ, but rebuffed the website's attempts to get a comment.

"This is so hard because I don't want to talk sh*t. I mean, I did know [she had defecated]," she told them.

"Justine and I are cool, we're friends, and I feel like if I was in this position, I wouldn't want people talking about it and making fun of me because MMA fans are relentless, they're ruthless.

"I know Justine is making light of it and made a funny tweet about it saying "sh*t happens" but I just feel like I shouldn't talk about it."
