Video: Kiwi FMX rider Levi Sherwood lands first ever double backflip without hands

When you've pulled off a double backflip on a motorbike - what can you do to top that?

How about doing it with no hands.

New Zealand Freestyle Moto-cross star Levi Sherwood is still on a high after landing his first ever double backflip in competition to retain his Nitro World Games title on Sunday, but the 26-year-old isn't resting on his laurels.

Newshub has gained first access to the previously unthinkable vision of Sherwood completing a no handed double backflip on Kiwi soil at his Palmerston North farm.

"I just had an idea that I wanted to do it," said Sherwood.

"I was taking one hand off and one foot and all the rest of it but I really wanted to do no hands and it took me months and months to actually get both hands to release off the bars."

Sherwood is preparing to unleash the heart-stopping move at the Red Bull X-Fighters in Madrid. If successful, he will be the first in the world to land the double backflip using no hands in competition.

"You have to pull as hard as you can and then take your hands off on the first rotation and then just really tuck back in there to get the bike to speed back up and land - the hardest thing for me is actually trying to stay attached to the bike."

Sherwood customised his bike at home in Palmerston North, stripping away 16kgs of weight replacing it with lighter material. He can't wait to show off his new trick at the iconic X-fighters event at legendary bullring Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas.

"Really pushing to get back on the podium this year and I think if I can go there with the new tricks and execute them the same way I execute all my other tricks I have a really good chance."

The FMX world will be waiting for July 7,  when Sherwood is looking to make it two from two in his 2017 season.
