Edgecumbe rugby team dedicates match to flood-stricken town

Three months on from the heartbreaking floods in Edgecumbe, the small Bay of Plenty Town is still feeling the effects.

But the community has rallied together, including its local rugby team, which made it to the final of the Baywide Division 2 competition.

When the raging floodwaters swept through Edgecumbe, they washed away houses, cars and residents' belongings.

It struck in the middle of the rugby season, which was a major setback for the Edgecumbe team.

"Ninety percent of our players got affected, families, some way or another," the rugby club's president Parekura Hale told Newshub.

"And they had to move out of Edgecumbe and couldn't train for a whole month."

They missed about five games but training resumed, even though many players had to travel from afar after being displaced from their homes.

"I thought we may have lost players over that time, but everyone supported each other and made sure that we did have a team," Mr Hale said.

Then they started to pick up a few wins and it all led to an intense moment on Saturday during the Division 2 final.

It was an away game against Murupara - another region also affected by the floods.

With both teams used to the wet, the rain had little effect. The scrums were just as tough as always, and the competition just as fierce.

And after 80 minutes of gruelling play Edgecumbe's golden run had been stopped, Murapara running out 30 to 5 winners.

"We didn't get the win today but like our supporters said, we did them proud just making it here and making it to the final," player Strauss Ririnui said.

And they showed their resilience and fighting spirit by wrapping up their bitter sweet season with a rousing haka.
