Kiwi FMX rider Levi Sherwood has become the first kiwi to ever win a freestyle gold medal at the Minneapolis X Games today - adding a third title to his 2017 campaign.

Despite stalling his bike on the first run, the 25-year old landed two double backflips to finish the round with a score of 91.00.

His second round was even more impressive as he showcased his signature no hand double backflip for the gold for a score of 92.33.

It was Sherwood's fourth X-games medal, previously winning three silvers in 2010, 2012 and 2015.

The gold medal completes the season hat trick for Sherwood, coming out on top at the Red Bull, X Fighters and X Games.

Sherwood will be back tomorrow to compete in the best trick final.
