Blockbusting Highlanders centre Malakai Fekitoa has confirmed he will be leaving New Zealand to play for Toulon at the end of the year.

As reported by Newshub on Thursday, Fekitoa will join former All Blacks Ma'a Nonu and Luke McAlister in Toulon.

In an Instagram post, the 25-year-old thanked fans, the Highlanders and New Zealand Rugby for their support.

"I wanted to let you all know that after a lot of thought I have decided to join Toulon (RCT) at the end of the year," the caption read.

"It has been the hardest decision of my life to leave New Zealand, but after looking at all the things that are important to me I feel this is the right time for me personally and for my career."

With the emergence of young midfielders Anton Lienert-Brown and Hurricanes livewire Ngani Laumape, Fekitoa has fallen behind in the All Blacks pecking order since the 2016 end of year tour.

The 24-Test All Black missed out on selection for the Lions tour to New Zealand however, received a call-up for the final Test following Sonny Bill Williams' suspension.
