The best is yet to come from New Zealand's first UFC champion, Robert Whittaker

Australia can have Pavlova and Crowded House if they want because New Zealand is laying claim to Robert Whittaker.

The 26-year-old, born at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, won the UFC interim middleweight championship on Sunday.

Whittaker pipped Cuban, Yoel Romero by decision at UFC 213, to set-up a 2018 showdown with injured champion, Brit Michael Bisping.

Despite the obvious accent and the southern-cross tattooed on his chest, the Sydney based mixed martial artist hopes to fight in the home of his birth in the near future.

Fighting for both Australians and New Zealanders, Whittaker looks set to become a UFC superstar.
