England cricket all-rounder Ben Stokes has spent a night in police cells after being arrested over a late-night incident which left a man in hospital with facial injuries.

The 26-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing bodily harm on Tuesday afternoon (NZT), after a night-out celebrating England's win over the West Indies.

An inquiry has been launched, with Stokes teammate, Alex Hales, said to be assisting officers.

The Christchurch-born cricket star, who reportedly injured his hand in the incident, has been released pending a full investigation but has been stood down for England's match with the West Indies on Thursday night (NZT).

The Test squad, which will tour Australia next month in a bid to retain the Ashes, is due to be announced on Thursday (NZT) - and director of cricket Andrew Strauss said that squad will be selected as planned.

"I went to see Ben last night down in Bristol," said Strauss.

"I will be addressing players this afternoon after practice. We will obviously be launching our own investigation into the circumstances surrounding this.

"The Ashes selection will be going ahead on form and fitness as planned."

According to The Daily Mail, Somerset Police later confirmed they were called to a disorder in Queens Rd, Clifton at around 2:35am on Monday.

"A 27-year-old man was found to have suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment.

"A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and has since been released under investigation."

Stokes was previously arrested in December 2011 for obstructing a police officer while out in Cumbria.
