2017 has been a bumpy ride for Kiwi Indycar driver Scott Dixon.

Dixon walked away from series crash at Indianapolis 500 and he was also held up at gunpoint in the same weekend.

Despite that, the 37-year-old is in with a chance of clinching his fifth Indycar championship.

The Kiwi sits second in the championship standings, three points behind Josef Newgarden.

"We pretty much just have to beat the number two car which is Josef Newgarden," Dixon told the AM Show.

"Will Power has an outside chance but mathematically in play and then Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud are just a little further back."

In total, five drivers in total have a mathematical chance of winning the title at the  Sonoma Raceway in California on Monday morning (NZ time).

Dixon won the championship in 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2015.
