Manawatu Turbos surge late to win 39-25 over Northland in Palmerston North

Manawatu have beaten Northland 39-25 at Central Energy Trust Arena on Friday night, claiming their third win of the season.

Northland started the match the brighter of the two Championship sides, almost scoring through winger Jordan Hyland, before the TMO ruled Josh Goodhue had knocked the ball on.

The home side then had a try of their own disallowed, the TMO once again in the thick of things; ruling out Michael Alaatoa’s try after Tom Parsons had lost the ball forward.

A Jade Te Rure penalty put the Turbos up 3-0, before Dan Hawkins levelled things almost immediately with one of his own.

The visitors did finally cross for the first try of the game, flanker Dan Pryor going over in the corner.

TMO Chris Jansen was asked for the third time by referee Ben O’Keffe to make a call on a potential try, deeming a Jack Goodhue try to have come by obstruction.

The Turbos did eventually cross the white chalk through Newton Tudreu, who intercepted a long pass to dot down, giving his side the 13-8 lead at the break.

An Ambrose Curtis try strengthened their lead shortly after the second-half started, before a Jack Ram double left things evenly poised with just over 10 minutes to go.

The result however was sealed after Tudreu’s second try of the night, fowlled by a Hamish Northcott charged down kick only metres out to give the home side the 39-25 win.
