Brendon Hartley finishes fourth in shortened race in World Endurance Championship

Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley's missed out on sealing the drivers' title, in the weather-shortened Fuji round of the World Endurance Championship.

Hartley, who's off to the US Formula One Grand Prix with Torro Rosso this weekend, was fourth with his Porsche team when the race was brought to a halt.

The 27-year-old, along with fellow Kiwi Earl Bamber and Timo Bernhard, only needed to finish ahead of the #8 Toyota in their Porsche 919 to seal the drivers' crown, but the Toyota was leading when the race was stopped, which resulted in them claiming the win.

It was Toyota's first win in the World Endurance Championships since May.

The victory for the Toyota keeps the title race open going into the penultimate round of the series at Shanghai next month. They trail by 39 points.

It was a disappointing result for Hartley who is on his way to Texas to make his Formula One debut this weekend.

Hartley will take the place of Pierre Gasly for next weekend's race in Austin while the Frenchman takes a brief break to compete in the Super Formula Championship in Japan.

Toro Rosso Team Principal Franz Tost has indicated that he's looking to use the American leg of the F1 Championship as an opportunity to evaluate new drivers to join the team for next season.
