Controversial American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick is filing a lawsuit against NFL team owners.

Court documents show the former San Francisco 49ers star claims team owners have colluded to keep him out of the league, following his protest against racial injustice.

The document says the league owners "colluded to deprive Mr Kaepernick of employment rights in retaliation for Mr Kaepernick's leadership and advocacy for equality and social justice".

According to Bleacher Report, Kaepernick  has hired attorney Mark Geragos.

The 29-year-old was notably the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem at the start of last season, as a protest against racial injustice, a move that many other NFL players have continued this season.

The continued protests have angered US President Donald Trump, who last week ordered Vice-President Mike Pence to leave a game between the 49ers and Indianapolis Colts, as players were protesting.
