Janine Southby out of her depth - former Silver Ferns coach Margaret Foster

One of New Zealand's most well-regarded netball coaches has questioned Janine Southby's role as head coach of the Silver Ferns.

The Silver Ferns suffered a series whitewash in the Constellation Cup for the first time since 2014, and they appeared to get worse after every game.

Former player and coach Margaret Foster told Newshub she believed Southby was out of her depth, saying the team had gone backwards after winning the Quad Series in August.

"I think us beating them was a fluke," said Foster.

"It would've been lovely to have seen us move forward from there, but if you look at it, the coaching staff have changed the line-up so many times.

"Literally, when I watched the third game of this Constellation Cup, every player but one was out of their position.

"So you've got to make sure we have a solid game plan and we have some consistency in our performances."

Foster also believed Southby and the Silver Ferns needed to bring back Laura Langman. The 31-year-old was currently applying her trade in the Australian domestic competition with the Sunshine Coast Lightning, which made her ineligible to play for New Zealand.

If Langman was back in the black dress, Foster thought the Silver Ferns would be a better side.

"Laura Langman is the world's best midcourt player and I'm feeling really embarrassed about this being a passionate netballer, of course, she should be in there.

"And I really do believe that if we're going to have a chance of winning at the Commonwealth Games, Janine should ask her to come back.

"She would bolster that midcourt, and, plus, Australia fear her. They're just laughing at us.

"It would be like not taking Richie McCaw to the Rugby World Cup."
