Joseph Parker faces potential Trans-Tasman bout against Lucas Browne

Joseph Parker's promoter David Higgins has hinted the WBO World Champion's next fight is likely to be against Australian Lucas Browne in a voluntary defence.

Browne, 38, has a professional record of 25-0 (22 KO's) since making his professional debut in 2009.

But the Australians career has been filled with controversy after failing a drug Test after winning the WBA world heavyweight title in 2016.

Speaking to Andrew Gourdie on RadioLIVE's Sunday Sport, Higgins said that 'Big Daddy's' camp have been in contact about a potential Trans-Tasman showdown.

"Bob Arum has mentioned a possible bout in the US in February and also Lucas Browne's people are talking to us about a big Trans-Tasman affair," Higgins told RadioLIVE.

"It would probably make sense in Auckland or New Zealand because Joe has a better fan base in New Zealand than Browne has in Australia so you could mount a big Trans-Tasman clash.

"Browne would have to be ranked by the WBO first but that could be possible so looking at December, maybe February which is a possibility.

"Joseph has a good profile in Australia because we gave away two or three of his fights for free to Fox Sports and they put him on their free channel.

"His last fight was put on Pay Per View and it didn’t do too bad. I was surprised how well it did - It wasn't massive but a decent amount of people got up to watch the fight which is encouraging."

Another opponent Parker has been linked to is Japanese heavyweight Kyotaro Fujimoto.

The 31-year-old has only lost one professional fight which was against Solomon Haumono - an opponent who Parker has previously beaten.

If Fujimoto is Parker's next opponent, the fight would take place in Japan - a place where the Kiwi  could grow his profile.

"I have had multiple emails and there a few conversations underway and that is the best way for it to be because you want to create some competition so you can get the best deal possible.

"We'd make history because no Japanese heavyweight has ever fought for the heavyweight title and Japan is like the second biggest economy in the world.

"It is attractive to broaden Joseph's appeal and profile around the world and to go to an Asian centre would be great.

"It is a similar time zone to New Zealand and Australia for TV and so it really comes down to what the deal looks like and we have got discussions underway, but that is not the only discussion which is underway.

"It is about making money, but not only getting the money it is about expanding profile as well."

Meanwhile fellow heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is defending his WBA and IBO titles against Kubrat Pulev on October 29 (NZ time).

The fight is taking place in Cardiff with more than 70,000 tickets already sold for the bout at Millennium Stadium.

Reports out of the UK have suggested that if Joshua beats his Bulgarian opponent, a fight against Joseph Parker could be in the pipelines in July next year.

Higgins believes that is Joshua wins and defends his titles, he will call out the Kiwi after the fight as many experts reckon Parker is less attractive after his win over Hughie Fury last month.

"I think unification against Joseph would be very attractive because Hughie Fury was so awkward and would make anyone not look their best.

"You saw Joe chasing Hughie around the ring looking for the knockout but with Joshua, you wouldn’t have to do that. He would walk square up to him be and be right in front of him.

"It would be an exciting fight but somebody would probably get knocked out and it will be more toe-to-toe and that is when it can go either way. Joseph has a few solid knockouts; he has a solid chin and has never been down.

"Remember Joshua got stood up by Dillian Whyte and got put on the canvas by Wladimir Klitschko so you could argue Joseph has a better chin. It could easily go Joseph's way."
