Ex-Manchester United star Patrice Evra kicks fan in head, red-carded before start of game

Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra's kick to the head of a fan has seen him red-carded before the opening whistle of his Marseille side's Europe League match on Friday morning (NZT).

In scenes reminiscent of Eric Cantona's infamous flying strike, the 36-year-old was captured unleashing a high kick at a supporter pitch-side as they took to the field to warm-up prior to their fixture against Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.

The confrontation was with a group of fans who had been jeering Evra for around half an hour, according to French publication L'Equipe.

The Frenchman had originally made his way across to talk to the unruly group before the situation quickly escalated into a near all-in brawl.

It's unknown exactly what the nature of the jibes from the crowd were, but UEFA's disciplinary body is expected to make their own inquiry into the incident on Saturday (NZT).

Marseille, who were forced to start the match with only 10 players, ultimately lost the contest 1-0.
