Peru's spot at the FIFA World Cup is in danger following reports the Peruvian government plans to take control of its football association.

The South American country won their spot at the FIFA World Cup finals last week, when they beat the All Whites 2-0 across two legs to qualify for the first time since 1982.

According to Peruvian newspaper Libero, Congresswoman Paloma Noceda wants the Institute of Sport to control the Peru football association - something FIFA has a very strong stance on.

If the Peruvian government completes the takeover, FIFA could take the extreme approach of excluding Peru from the World Cup in Russia. FIFA would then be able to choose a replacement

"There may be concern from FIFA, but we need to do things for the good of Peruvian sport," Ms Noceda told Libero.

"No bill will prevent Peru from going to the World Cup. If this could affect Peru, it will be debated and removed."

While Italy have been touted as Peru's potential replacement, it is unlikely it will be a European country that would be called in to take Peru's spot, as no more than 13 European nations can enter a World Cup.

As the All Whites were eliminated by Peru, it would appear they would have a better chance of being the team selected.
