Peru's opening goal against All Whites sparks earthquake warning

Peru's opening goal against the All Whites in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday (NZT) not only sparked nationwide hysteria, it also sent simulated shockwaves through the earth.

Jefferson Farfan's 27th-minute strike triggered earthquake warnings via a phone app designed to detect tremors, according to Goal.com.

The app sent an alert to its users just moments after the striker fired home from close range in the first of Peru's two goals in their 2-0 victory in Lima.

Researchers promptly confirmed that the movement was caused by the simultaneous celebration of the goal rather than any genuine seismic activity.

"It is confirmed that there is no natural earthquake activity in Lima. It seems the Peruvians' excitement made the application activate," said Sismologia Chile in a tweet.

The goal put the Peruvians in the driver's seat on their way to securing their first World Cup Finals berth since 1982.
