Scotland fullback Stuart Hogg credits Beauden Barrett's last ditch try-saving tackle

A disappointed Stuart Hogg knows he was metres away from making history as Scotland fell short, 22-17 against the All Blacks on Sunday morning (NZ time).

The fullback was five metres from the try line when Beauden Barrett's last-gasp tackle on Hogg ensured the All Blacks won the match on a cold night in Edinburgh.

Hogg was full of emotion when the referee blew his whistle to end the match after he nearly did the unthinkable, but his desperate inside pass was forward, and Scotland fell short of claiming their biggest ever Test win.

"It was the brink of something pretty bloody special, wasn't it? The boys were devastated," said Hogg after the match.

"Like always, I backed my ability and tried to get there.

"Credit to Beauden Barrett for a cracking tackle - I was pretty gutted to chuck the ball away. On another day that comes off."

Hogg was very influential for Scotland in a man of the match performance with accurate kicking and brilliant footwork which troubled the All Blacks defence at times.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen was asked about the final play of the game, and he was very relieved with Barrett's superb tackle.

"I thought hopefully somebody was going to tackle him," he said. "Didn't have much time to think about much else he was running that quick."

The Scots were the better of the two teams during the match but ultimately were left to rue a number of missed opportunities, knocking the ball on twice, metres from the try line in the first half.

Hogg knows they left one too many opportunities slip during the match and that ultimately cost them dearly.

"We got ourselves good opportunities to score tries, we probably left a couple out there, we can take a huge amount of confidence going forward," said Hogg.

"Credit to them, they were outstanding and took their opportunities well when they were there."

When they went a couple of tried ahead, there was never a point in that game where I thought the game was dead and buried."
