Football legend Diego Maradona unveiled a statue of himself at a grand Indian reception in Kolkata, India on Tuesday (NZT).

The former Argentine World Cup hero was honoured in the football mad city with a massive 12ft, bronze replica.

Unfortunately the statue didn't bare much resemblance to the 1986 World Cup winner.

However the 57-year-old said he was honoured to receive such a humbling gift.

'I am not god of football but a simple footballer,' he said modestly. 'I'm happy to be here in Kolkata again. It's amazing to have my statue here.'

The former Argentina international has become an icon in Kolkata after an original visit in 2008, during which thousands of fans packed into the airport to catch a glimpse of one of the game's greats.
