New Zealand's Cody Harris advances to first round of PDC World Darts Championships

New Zealand's Cody Harris has won his preliminary qualifier to progress to the first round of the PDC World Championships in London on Monday morning (NZT).

The Aucklander beat American Willard Bruguier 2-1 at the hallowed Alexandra Palace to clinch a spot in the tournament's final 62.

He'll face a much sterner test later in the morning (NZT) against England's Ian White who currently holds a world ranking of 17.

The 32-year-old father of  was fancied to overcome his North American Champion opponent but was forced to battle until the very end to earn the victory.

Bruguier had three opportunities to nail a double six after a nervy ending last few rounds from the Kiwi but was unable to do so, with Harris stepping up to do exactly and seal the win.

Harris quailifed for the 72-man tournament after winning DartPlayers New Zealand's annual qualifying event, telling Newshub it was the culmination of a lifetime of hard work.

"It was a great feeling. It was a relief because I'd been trying for a few years and just really happy I made it this time," said Harris.

"It means a lot, it's a dream come true really it's amazing."
