Blues CEO Michael Redman hints Tana Umaga set to stay as head coach

Tana Umaga seems set to remain as the Blues head coach when his contract comes up for review after the current Super Rugby season.

The Auckland-based franchise has endured another miserable campaign, currently anchored at the bottom of the New Zealand conference with just two wins from eight games.

On Tuesday, chief executive Michael Redman told media that they'd prefer to retain the existing coaching team, despite mounting pressure for change.

Redman said there the roles would be confirmed within the next few weeks, but gave a strong indication that Umaga would be granted an extension on his expiring three-year contract.

"I think it's fair to say there is plenty of support for Tana within New Zealand Rugby and the Blues," said Redman.

"We think he's got a great rugby brain, he has the respect of the players, and he has my support and the support of the board. So we'll work through the process to determine what the coaching group looks like."

He added that the former All Black captain was eager to continue at the helm, putting the club's struggles down to systemic, rather than any individual, failure.

"We're part of a system, we're the fully professional end of that system, but all the parts of that system need to work. What we can control is our environment and the quality of people we bring into our environment, the coaches and players, and the resources and culture we have around them.

"We haven't been able to deliver and changing coaches every cycle hasn't worked for the Blues previously. Our preferred option would be to try to work with the group we have.

"But we have to make sure we get the shifts as well. Some of those shifts are on-field and some are off-field.

"As long we see that growth is happening individually and at the club, then I think we're prepared to keep going."
