A Ferrari Formula 1 pit crew member has a shinbone and fibula fracture after driver Kimi Raikkonen ran over his leg during the Bahrain Grand Prix on Monday morning (NZ time).

The mechanic - who was fitting the Finn's rear tyre - was taken to hospital after the horrific event, which was being shown live on televisions all over the world.

A stretcher was brought in to assist the pit crew member, and he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fibula fracture.

The former world champion was forced to retire because of the incident and was filmed walking into his garage without asking about his crew member.

"I don't know what shape he is in. It is not great for him. I go when the light is green. Not much to say," Raikkonen told reporters after the race.

"We did not finish the race, so it is not great, but this is what happens sometimes."

Fellow Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel went onto win the second Grand Prix of the year, while Kiwi Brendon Hartley matched his best finish in six drives when he crossed the line in 13th.
