Golf: Lydia Ko jumps in world rankings after drought-breaking tournament win

  • 01/05/2018

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has climbed five spots in world rankings after her drought-breaking victory on the LPGA Tour yesterday.

The 21 year-old won the Mediheal Championship at San Francisco with a stunning eagle on the first playoff hole, her first triumph on Tour since July 2016.

This was Ko's 15th tour victory and her third on the Lake Merced course since turning professional as a 14-year-old, but she had gone 44 tournaments since her last win and plummeted from her position atop the rankings as a teenager.

Her latest result has seen her reclaim some of that lost ground, jumping from 18th to 13th.

Golf Channel expert Ron Sirak has no doubts that Ko is back to her best.

"All the second guessing that was going on around her as she made all these changes, she just blocked it out," he says. "She got off social media, she quite reading about herself and just went about her business."

Ko pocketed almost NZ$320,000 for the victory, while one Kiwi punter won NZ$260,000 after betting $10,000 at the TAB on Ko to win.
