Tai Wynyard's college basketball career at the University of Kentucky has come to an abrupt end, after he was released in the wake of his suspension from the team in a gun-related incident.

Wynyard has announced on Twitter that he is parting ways with the Division 1 NCAA team.

"Everyone is on a different path," he said. "Although that path will be somewhere else, I'll never forget this place.

"From day one, beginning with my first home game against Louisville in 2015, this place has shown me nothing but love."

Wynyard hasn't taken the court since February, when it was reported that the 20-year-old had taken an armed escort to a college party.

Projected as New Zealand's next young basketball prospect, Wynyard played just 97 minutes for Kentucky over two seasons, and due to injuries and the team violation, only played eight games in the 2017-18 season.

The Kiwi scored just 19 points overall in his Kentucky career.

"This decision wasn't an easy one for me to make and I appreciate the commitment and support Coach Cal gave me in reaching it," said Wynyard.

In a release from the university, coach John Calipari wished Wynyard the best of luck and hoped he found a new home that welcomed him with open arms.

"We haven't had a lot of players transfer, but when a player comes to me and asks for a fresh start, I will always support them."

Calipari noted in the release that moving from New Zealand may have had an effect on his ill-luck with Kentucky.

"We talk all the time about this being a new experience for our players, but I believe it was even tougher for Tai because of where he came from," he said.

"To come to a new country in the middle of the season and try to carve out a role was difficult, but I'm proud of Tai for the person he's grown into.”

With Wynyard gaining a full release, he'll now explore his options for the 2018-19. Wynyard's still unsure where that will be, but praised Calipari and his teammates for the foundation they provided to his young career abroad.

"I want to thank you for your support. Kentucky will always hold a special place in my heart."

Wynyard has played for the Tall Blacks as a teeanger and was a development player for the NZ Breakers before taking up his scholarship.
